Room for creativity

Something special awaits our guests and their families when they enter the children’s hospice: a wooden flamingo. Each family creates their own individual flamingo, which accompanies them on every stay and symbolizes their journey at the children’s hospice.

Each one unique

The blanks for the wooden flamingo were created in the Zurich integration joinery. The flamingo molds were prepared there with great care and craftsmanship.

Kurt Flach, the oldest employee of the joinery, plays a special role in the history of its creation. He devoted a great deal of time and passion to making the blanks. In just under five months, he has produced an impressive 200 small and 150 large flamingos – a figure of which he is rightly particularly proud, especially as he can only work half a day at a time for health reasons.

The precise handling of the scroll saw requires the utmost concentration and care – especially with the inner circle, the “belly” of the flamingo. It is precisely these fine details that make every shape something special. For Kurt Flach, it was a great pleasure to create something new and meaningful for the children’s hospice. With a smile, he says: “I would love to go on vacation in the flamingo!”

Small works of art

A personal work of art is created from the carefully crafted blanks: each family designs their own flamingo – colorful, individual and full of meaning. With colors, symbols, names or personal messages, it becomes an expression of hope, solidarity and remembrance. Unique works of art have been created, some of which also decorate our dining room. A small wooden blank, which is also designed by the families and contains the child’s name, serves as a doorplate in the guest room.

The designed flamingo accompanies the families during every stay at the children’s hospice. It symbolizes their journey, shared moments, strength in challenging times – and the traces that every family leaves behind. It combines craftsmanship, social commitment and humanity – and turns a piece of wood into a valuable symbol of solidarity.
